95% of the cells in the epidermis are keratinocytes. They are found in the basal layer of the skin. This layer functions as a barrier for reduction of moisture loss and for the entry of infectious agents into the body.
Medicytes's human primary epidermal keratinocytes (HEK) are isolated from adult epidermis (different locations). By applying its proprietary and novel upcyte® technology, Medicyte is able to extend the lifespan of human primary epidermal keratinocytes. Those human upcyte® Keratinocytes are able to proliferate longer than the usual lifespan of 25 population doublings of primary HEKs, while retaining their primary cell characteristics without being immortalized.
Large batches of human upcyte® Keratinocytes from one donor can be generated such that they retain their specific characteristics.
If you would like to work with our human upcyte® Keratinocytes, we offer cryopreserved cells under a license.

Applications:
For each product a protocol for use and a certificate of analysis will be delivered. All offered upcyte® cells can be used in BSL1 laboratory or higher and are tested for CMV, HIV, Hepatitis B and C and negative for mycoplasma, bacteria, yeast, fungi.
Nevertheless, the cells - like all products of human origin - should be handled as potentially infectious. No test procedure can completely guarantee the absence of infectious agents.
